Zermatt Rothorn: no summer operation
Cable car out of order.
The tower 1 of the cableway was built on permafrost soil which is gradually thawing out because of the warmer temperatures. This leads to an unstable foundation. As a result of these ground movements, the safe operation of the Blauherd-Rothorn cable car is currently not ensured. Geologists, civil engineers and specialists from the cableway construction company are currently working out possible measures to restore the lift. Various ways of tackling the repair work have already been put forward. Whichever scenario is selected, comprehensive construction work is necessary. Therefore, the Blauherd-Rothorn lift will not be operating summer services in 2018.
The STS Mountain Excursion Rothorn - Zermatt (railticketing article 12968) will be blocked as of 05 June 2018. Tickets that have already been sold can be refunded on site or can be used to Sunnegga or Blauherd. The unused part will be refunded as well.
The cableway connection to Sunnegga is not affected and recommended as alternative for customers (railticketing article 12967).
