Commissioning of the Ceneri Base Tunnel

Ceneri Base Tunnel

With the commissioning of the Ceneri Base Tunnel and the first scheduled long-distance train to pass through on December 13, 2020, the New Alpine Transversal (NEAT) is complete.

On the day of the timetable change, the Ceneri Base Tunnel will officially enter into operation and Europe will move a little closer together. After the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel (57 km) in 2016, the Ceneri Base Tunnel with its 15.4 kilometres now completes the New Alpine Transversal (NEAT). Thus, the continuous flat railway from Altdorf to Lugano becomes reality. Since trains can reach top speeds of up to 250 km/h on this new line, and the travel time from Zurich to Milano is shortened significantly. Also, new direct connections to Genoa and Bologna are being planned. Fast, comfortable and environmentally friendly – for travellers as well as freight traffic.

The benefits of the Ceneri Base Tunnel:

  • shorter travel times on the improved north-south axis
  • more connections through the Gotthard Base Tunnel
  • Comfortable arrival from Italy
  • More connections to Milan
  • Climate-friendly mobility: saves CO2 and time
